This project is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program at Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta, aiming to transform organic waste into high-value products by harnessing the power of nature: earthworms (Lumbricus sp.).

The project is driven by the belief that sustainable solutions often stem from natural processes. Earthworms are not only effective decomposers but also a resource rich in benefits. Guided by lecturers and a spirit of collaboration, our team designed a system based on a “Vermicompost Bin”—a simple reactor made from a modified plastic drum, enabling efficient composting and earthworm cultivation at household or community scale.

The core of this technology is the vermicomposting process, where earthworms consume organic waste (such as food scraps and leaves) and convert it into super-quality organic fertilizer known as vermicompost. The result is a nutrient-rich fertilizer that improves soil fertility, retains moisture, and supports soil microbe ecosystems. In parallel, the earthworm population multiplies, providing raw material for other derivative products.

Beyond producing fertilizer, the project processes earthworms into valuable herbal health products. Through a series of experiments, we successfully developed “Earthworm Coffee,” a blend of dried earthworm powder and robusta coffee. This product utilizes the protein and bioactive compounds in earthworms, traditionally believed to have benefits for digestive health, blood circulation, and improving energy and sleep quality.

This project is not just about the products, but also about a holistic learning process. Our team went through all stages, from design, tool fabrication, earthworm cultivation, processing, to organoleptic testing. We also faced and solved real challenges, such as determining the optimal growing medium for the worms and refining the earthworm coffee formulation for better taste and aroma.

The impact of this project is multi-level. Environmentally, it offers a practical solution to reduce organic waste at the source while producing natural fertilizer. Economically, it opens opportunities for micro-enterprises through the sale of vermicompost, earthworms, and innovative products like earthworm coffee. Socially, it enhances knowledge and skills in sustainable waste management and natural resource utilization.

Amidst the growing problem of organic waste, we present an innovative and environmentally friendly solution through the MBKM Earthworm Processing Project.
