Sustainable Program Plastic Waste

Plastic Waste Recycling Summer Course: Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable Planet

This summer, take on one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges through the lens of engineering and innovation. The Indonesian Summer Course Program in Plastic Waste Recycling is a comprehensive, hands-on journey that transforms you from a student into a sustainability-focused engineer. Over eight intensive weeks, you’ll join an international cohort to tackle the plastic crisis head-on—not just by studying it, but by designing, building, and operating a functional machine that recycles waste into new possibilities. This program goes beyond theory, embedding you in the full lifecycle of a real-world engineering project aimed at creating tangible environmental impact.

Your journey will begin with a deep dive into the principles of sustainability, life-cycle thinking, and Industry 4.0. Through interactive sessions, you’ll learn to analyze the plastic waste problem and use tools like the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate and select the most effective, eco-friendly technological solutions. This foundational knowledge is immediately put into practice as you transition into the role of a project engineer. You’ll visit local waste banks and recycling facilities on insightful field trips, seeing the challenges and opportunities firsthand, before returning to the Automation Laboratory to begin your mission: to create a custom plastic recycling machine.

The core of the experience is a total immersion in the engineering process. Collaborating in cross-cultural teams, you will navigate every stage of machine creation. This includes meticulous CAD design of mechanical and electrical systems, hands-on fabrication involving cutting, welding, and assembly, and the critical integration of sensors, controllers, and automation. You’ll gain practical skills in electrical wiring, safety protocols, and controller programming. The climax of the project is the experimental phase, where you’ll use statistical software like Minitab to design experiments, operate your machine to process sorted plastics, and analyze the quality of the output. This program uniquely balances hard technical skills (80% of evaluation) with essential soft skills (20%), assessing your ability to manage projects, communicate effectively, and collaborate in a diverse, global team. By the final presentation, you will have more than a certificate; you’ll have the proven capability to engineer solutions for a circular economy and the confidence that your skills can contribute to a healthier planet. Join us this summer and be part of the generation that builds a sustainable future.
