Organic Fertilizer Bioreactor

ARTECH Summer Course: Organic Fertilizer – Engineering a Sustainable Future

Imagine a summer where your engineering skills help cultivate the future. Welcome to the ARTECH International Summer Course on Organic Fertilizer, a unique two-month program that seamlessly blends industrial automation with environmental sustainability. This isn’t just about building a machine; it’s about creating an entire circular system—from digital design to functional product—that tackles real-world agricultural challenges. As part of a diverse, international team, you’ll embark on an ambitious project to design, fabricate, and operate your own automated bioreactor for producing organic fertilizer.

The journey begins in our state-of-the-art Automation Laboratory, where you and your peers from UAJY and around the world will tackle the first challenge: engineering the machine itself. Using professional CAD software, you will model and design a complete bioreactor system, including silos, piping, and mechanical frameworks. This digital blueprint will then come to life through hands-on fabrication, where you’ll learn to assemble frames, integrate electronics, and wire control systems. The project’s core intelligence comes from programming, where you’ll use industry-standard tools like Arduino, PLCs, and SCADA software to develop an automated control system that monitors and manages the delicate fermentation process. Week by week, you’ll progress from initial sketches and design reviews to the thrilling phases of assembly, rigorous durability testing, and final optimization.

However, the innovation doesn’t stop at the machine. True to the ARTECH (Art & Technology) philosophy, this program pushes creativity into production. Once your bioreactor is operational, you will use it to produce actual organic fertilizer. You’ll engage in the entire product lifecycle—experimenting with organic inputs, managing the biological process, and learning about packaging and basic product presentation. This holistic approach ensures you gain not only mechanical and automation skills but also an understanding of sustainable production and entrepreneurial thinking. Balancing hard technical skills with essential soft skills like cross-cultural teamwork, project management, and effective communication, the course prepares you to be a versatile engineer for a greener planet. Spend your summer with us, and turn engineering principles into a project that grows—literally.
