The country is known for its remarkable diversity, with approximately 100 ethnic groups and over 200 local languages spread from Sabang to Merauke, from the western to the eastern part of Indonesia.

Pancasila serves as the philosophical foundation and national ideology, guiding Indonesians to live in unity despite cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. This diversity is one of Indonesia’s greatest strengths and defines its national identity.

Indonesia’s sea territory is larger than its land area, making it a true archipelagic nation. According to data from the Ministry of Home Affairs (2004), Indonesia has 17,504 islands, of which 7,870 have been named while 9,634 remain unnamed. The five largest islands are Papua, Borneo (Kalimantan), Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. Although Bali is not among the largest islands, it is the most internationally recognized tourist destination.

Java, or “Jawa” as Indonesians call it, is the most populous island in Indonesia. It is home to the Javanese and Sundanese, the two largest ethnic groups in the country. Java consists of six provinces: Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java.

Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is located in the northwestern part of Java. It is a vibrant metropolitan city and serves as the economic, political, and cultural center of the country. Rapid urbanization has made Jakarta the most populous city in Indonesia.

Indonesia is also well known for its rich cultural heritage and traditions. Each region has its own unique customs, traditional clothing, dances, and cuisines. This cultural diversity makes Indonesia a fascinating place for international visitors to explore and experience different ways of life.

In addition to its cultural richness, Indonesia is home to breathtaking natural landscapes, including tropical beaches, mountains, volcanoes, and rainforests. From the famous beaches of Bali to the natural beauty of Komodo Island and Raja Ampat, Indonesia offers a wide range of destinations for adventure and exploration.

Indonesia is also a rapidly developing country with growing industries in engineering, technology, and manufacturing. This makes it an ideal destination for students seeking international internships and professional experience. Through IAESTE programs, students can gain hands-on experience while also learning about Indonesia’s dynamic work environment and culture.

Indonesian people are known for their friendliness and hospitality. International students will find a welcoming environment, making it easier to adapt and build meaningful connections during their stay.

Indonesia offers not only rich cultural diversity but also vast opportunities for international students to experience new environments, traditions, and perspectives. Through programs such as IAESTE, students can gain valuable professional experience while immersing themselves in Indonesia’s unique cultural landscape.

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, consisting of more than 17,800 islands, many of which are uninhabited.
